Self-harm is when you hurt yourself as a way of dealing with very difficult feelings, painful memories or overwhelming situations and experiences.

Self-harm is a global public health problem which is increasing in young people, especially in young girls but it is not only young people that experience self harming behaviours.

Self-harm is one of the strongest known predictors of death by suicide, with half of young people who die by suicide having previously self-harmed. And is associated with significantly reduced life expectancy, with an average of up to 40 years of life lost to external causes.
